We got a good sleep in the hut, woke up to a pretty sunrise, spent four hours grinding down the mountain, and got back to our van, diving in and driving off to escape the bees.

The morning view from the hut window |

Going up to go down. Part of the route off the mountain was a 350 foot ascent up a side ridge before the long descent. Errg, can't we just go down already!? |
|
View from our lunch site, knees sore and still a couple hours to go |
|
On the drive out we saw a family of California Quail. First time we've ever seen them. And they had their little babies with them, although probably bigger than when the kids saw them on the North Island a month ago. |

We found a small campground in Port Motueka, cooked spaghetti, and visited with 36 chooks and 2 chicks from Germany.
