Sunday, February 24 - Driving day

We got a late start on Sunday, with me blogging, and then the three of us trading travel yarns and learning about the great bicycling network in Europe from a charming Belgian couple we met in the campground.
The road through the pass is subjected to avalanches and waterfalls.

On the other side of the divide we saw fields where it looked like the farmers
were trying to grow rocks.   Actually, the soil is so full of stones from the
glaciers that they have to be piled up to give grazing space for cattle and sheep.

An old coal mining site.  The area reminded us a lot of Appalachia ...

... in more way than one.  Like country hill folk everywhere, these Kiwibillies
have a sense of humor.

An interesting cloud formation outlined the top of this mountain

Now that's a motor home.  We've seen quite a few examples of these elaborate
homemade trailers on both the North and South Island.
