We've arrived in a green, misty, and peopled land
Another driving
day, but six weeks after Broken Hill and being in the outback, we
were returning to 'civilization'. Somewhere west of Atherton power
lines appeared along the side of the road, and we began to see small
farms and homes. The flora was rapidly changing too, more big
trees, greener fields, and flowering shrubs. By the time we got
to Herberton it was absolutely lush.

We made a short
side trip to see the Hypipamee
Crater. It was formed when hot gases from a nearby volcano made
their way to the rocky surface, blowing a 200 foot wide and 270 foot
deep crater out of the solid rock. Now it's filled with water, and
looking down into it makes you feel like your falling. There were also
some nice falls at the park.

After
shopping in Atherton we drove around in the dark on busy roads
looking for a place to camp. I thought we'd end up either sleeping
in a banana grove or back in town at a hotel, but Diana spotted a
small campground and we took refuge. Good thing too, because I
wasn't going to cook in a banana grove. We had a delicious meal of
lamb steaks, potatoes and asparagus.
That crater looks a little like the sinkholes in the Yucatan. Is it a similar geologic process?
ReplyDeleteDo they have lots of warnings against campfires in such a dry country?
