Drive a lot, see a few craters, burn some wood
Friday
was mostly a travel day. Did see a few sights along the way;
Ooo, their vacation didn't go as planned |
Wedge-tailed eagle having lunch |
I scared him away trying to sneak up on him... does the term 'eagle-eyed' mean anything to you, Kevin? |
Our one big stop of the day was the Henbury Meteorite Site. About 4000 years
ago a large meteor split up and slammed into the ground, leaving 14
craters in a relatively small area covering around 100 acres. The
largest crater is 180 meters in diameter and 15 deep, the smallest
only about 5 meters across. What's so interesting about the craters
isn't the size but the fact that it's a whole field of craters. And the Aboriginals have some interesting myths about the area, considering it a taboo place. Since it's only been 4000 years since impact occurred and native people have lived here 10 times that long that's not surprising. We wandered around the place for an hour, then
moved on.

We
ended up the night at a pretty red-sand rest area, made beef
stroganoff, made our first camp fire, and heard this valuable advice
from an old bushman camping nearby,
“When you go north go to Devil's Marbles, you'll see a dingo named
Bob. Don't let the ranger see you, but Bob will appreciate it if you
give him a drink."
