Friday, November 9 Roadside rest south of Normanton to Croydon Caravan Park – Driving Day

     More long empty roads. I timed how long between approaching cars, averaged about 25 minutes. If we're going 80 kph and they're going 100, that means it's about 75 km between cars. The Northern Territory does have a lot of termites though. They vary in size and shape and color, this is one of the better mound fields we saw;

It doesn't take too much to get our attention out here in the Outback
      We stopped for a picnic lunch in Normanton. Close enough to the Gulf of Carpentaria for prawn and barramundi fishing but far enough to avoid the worst of the disease carrying bugs (in the 1870's. It's not a problem any more). The town reminded me of a Louisiana gulf town. Their biggest claim to fame is a life-sized statue of 'Krys”, a monstrous saltwater crocodile that was killed in 1958 by a woman croc hunter. He was over 28 feet long and weighed two tons. Not only was he bigger that a Volkswagen minibus, he could probably have eaten one.

Krys getting ready for lunch

We went into this place for fish and chips...

...but they had finished serving lunch, so we had a picnic instead
     We spent the night at Croydon Caravan Park, nearly at the end of our dry outback adventures, eating crackers and cheese with a cask of the worst red wine we've had in Oz.  I had to dilute mine with ice and Schweppes Lime soda.  I know, sound like an outback cocktail, only worse.

Alright mate, say goodbye to the lizards, you're in my territory now!

    1. I am a math nerd, although as Ryan comments, it hasn't been 20 years since Belize, so my memory is a little slow on the uptake. I was remembering Kristy trying to swim out in the waves to where we were snorkeling, and that was in Baja and she was pretty young. I think you guys were around 14,12,10,and 8 for the Belize trip. Still, that was 15 or 16 years ago.

    2. You gotta admit, it's pretty incredible that Mount Vernon has over twice as many people as the Barkly Tablelands, which would be the fourth biggest state in the US if it joined the Union.
