Saturday, February 16 - Bagpipes and penguins

We stayed at a small campground in this valley.  Looks beautiful ...
... but an eerie strangeness abounds.

All looks innocent enough...

... until you see the poor souls who have been turned to plaster.
Then, you arrive in Dunedin, and you could swear
you're in Scotland.  Actually, the Gaelic name
for Edinburgh is Dun Eideann, which had been home
for some of the first European settlers of the area.

We didn't stay in Dunedin long, planning to return in a couple days.  First
we wished to explore the Otago peninsula.  At Sandfly Beach (now there's
a name sure to attract tourists)  we watched this yellow-eyed penguin
make his way up the shore...
...  moving with his awkward gait ...
... and then slowly struggling up the dune to his nest.  Could be a male or
female, both care for their young, which are nearly ready to head out to the
sea themselves at this time of year.  But, they are well hidden and we
never saw them.
